Winston Churchill - hero or villain?
John O’Donnell says villain due to the Tonypandy miners strike, i’ll Be generous to him and say he was only allowed a one word answer.

The well known columnist Afula Hirsch states he was a racist and misogynistic but she dislikes anyone with a whiter skin than her own so her opinion is invalid.

So was he a hero or villain? We have to take into consideration that we are in different times now so what was deemed as acceptable then might not be now.

For me he will always be a hero who galvanised the British nation.

Anyone who looks at Churchill with black and white thinking is a simple fucking spaz.

Bit of both... made huge mistakes (Irish problem, Galipolli) but was the rock that the whole country lent on during those dark days... and that is what he will be remembered for more than anything

Wasn't perfect by any means but if Chamberlain had stayed in power, we'd be eating Sauerkraut for breakfast

Re: Winston Churchill - hero or villain?
I'd have refused to answer the question TBH. It can never be a one-word answer.

A Ginger Tory Heffer wrote a good piece on him, if you've 10 hours to spare

As others have said, he's far too complex a character living in uniquely momentous times to boil him down to hero or villain.

But in an age when we are now all supposed to respect the will of the people without question, it's worth remembering that the good old British electorate in 1945 didn't want him to run the country.

Wartime hero, for sure.

The rest, as has been said, gets complicated.

Some great lines though.

I’ve always thought the hero worship was a bit over done despite appreciating his contribution to the war effort. Now that he’s annoying all the right people though, I’d happily build a 30ft statue to him on my front lawn.

A brilliant leader in a time of war and not a brilliant leader in a time of relative peace.

Simply put, place him on the scales of justice and the world is a better place because of his existence. There are not many people you can say that about.

White, English

They’ll start on a few others once he’s been demonised.

Re: Winston Churchill - hero or villain?
WW1 - a disaster monger
WW2 - just the ticket, great oratory (did he write all his own?) and leadership
Home Sec etc. and Peacetime PM - mediocre
'Civilian' - wrote well and a dab hand with the paints.

Of course he is a hero, but if you base the question on todays PC and "lets not offend anyone" mindset then he is a cunt of the highest order.

Thank fuck back in the 1940,s he was seen as a hero, as otherwise we would all be swearing allegiance to the third Reich.....

I don't think it's in any way fair to judge historical figures by the standards of today. Because he's white and establishment he's an easy target until the pendulum swings back the other way. There are lots more that would revere him if he was black, gay or transgender.

What I do remember from my childhood is how upset my parents were when he died and the hundreds of thousands that turned out for his funeral. That's the real measure of the Englishman...

This country wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for him.

Legendary wartime leader.

The left seem to forget that Churchill, along with Lloyd George and later Beveridge, was the father of the welfare state.
